The staff actively works to turn off the lights in the common areas. LED lights have recently been installed in the first floor of Rempel and in the common areas of all buildings to promote energy efficiency.
Quarterly newsletters have been produced since 2001, first in hard copies and now via emails. These newsletters often contain sustainability messaging to update subscribers on Shadowcliff’s latest project.
Shadowcliff uses carpet tiles rather than traditional carpet in most areas. Carpet tiles are reusable and easy for volunteers to install and staff to clean.
The exterior entry area has been converted into “Judith’s Garden”, in which Judith introduces native species to the garden.
During Memorial Day Weekend of 2001, volunteers created a trail from RiverBend Cabin to the Rempel Lodge. That initial trail has now been significantly expanded into The Laws of Nature trail which encircles the property. This provides five rest overlooks with tasteful signs identifying two of nature’s basic operating principles at each location. over Guests are able to easily wander and explore Shadowcliff’s beautiful natural setting.
In the early 2000’s, interest in recycling grew exponentially. To accommodate, Shadowcliff provided onsite recycling and additionally sent batteries and metals to large cities to be properly disposed of by guests and volunteers.
In 2008, Shadowcliff hosted a Grand County multi-day recycling conference at the YMCA in Tabernash/Frazier to bring their recycling goals to a larger audience.
Posters have been created and posted in the buildings describing environmental practices that Shadowcliff encourages from its guests and staff.
Low VOC paints have become readily available in the past decade, and Shadowcliff utilizes these for all projects.
Shadowcliff strives to determine the environmental impact of all purchases and decisions, and considers this a high priority value.
Shadowcliff jumped into the Green America Business Network early on to commit to sustainable practices.
